Adoption Stories: Shelby was at WAG Shelter in Whistler waiting for a home & recovering from being hit by a car. Rupert’s expectant mum was dropped off at Chilliwack Animal Control where he & his sibling’s were later born.

Breed Info. for the Bavarian Hound

The Bavarian Hound’s head is strong and elongated. Their ears are high set & med. length. Broader at the base with rounder tips, they hang heavily against the head. Their body is slightly longer then tall with a raised rump aiding in it’s natural agility. Bavarian Hound’s coat is short, thick & shiny, lying flat against the body. It is moderately harsh while finer on the head and ears, it can come in all shades of black-masked fawn or brindle. They commonly weigh between 20 to 25kg.

Bavarian Hounds are calm, quiet, poised and very attached to their owners or family. When working they are hard, focused and persistent. Courageous, spirited and fast they are at ease on rugged terrain.

A scent hound used in Germany since the Middle Ages to trail wounded game. Because of their superb nose and powerful hunting instinct they are often owned and used by foresters and game wardens.

Breed Info.for the Labrador Retriever (Lab)

One of several kinds of retriever, a type of gun dog well know for their webbed paws for swimming, they were originally used for retrieving fishing nets & fallen game. The Labrador Retriever has a broad head with a strong & powerful jaw. Ears are set slightly above their eye’s hanging close to their head. They are known to have an appearance of proportionality, being as tall as they are long. The Lab’s coat should be short and dense, but not wiry. Often described as “water-repellent” the dogs coat is naturally slightly dry & oily so the dog does not get cold when taking to water in Winter. Colours range from black, chocolate to yellow (from ivory or creme to fox red). Labrador’s can be relatively large weighing between 55-90lbs.

Typically Lab’s are athletic, loving to swim as well as play catch and retrieve games. They are know to be great companions for people of all ages, from young children to the elderly. A Labrador’s temperament is described as kind, outgoing and tractable. Their fun-loving boisterousness and lack of fear require’s training and firm handling at times. They mature at around three years of age, displaying a significant degree of puppy-like energy before this time. Lab’s have a well know reputation for appetite, some individuals being highly indiscriminate, eating digestible and non-food items alike. They can also be very persuasive and persistent in requesting food, so the Labrador owner must carefully control their dog’s food intake to avoid obesity.

The Labrador is one of the most popular breed of dog by registered ownership in Canada, U.S.A. and the United Kingdom as well as many other countries. They are also one of the most popular assistance dog breeds, being widely used by police and other official bodies for their detection and working abilities.
